Walker Darke: European Environmental Security and International Sustainability
30 August , 2022

First of all, I would like to mention that safety and security in Europe is not only about Europe, but it's connected around the world. For me, personally, there are many different security challenges. We can talk about ongoing escalation in Eastern Europe, we can talk about climate change, and we can talk about the incredibly difficult summer we've had because of the climate crisis in Europe. But also going into winter, when the cost-of-living crisis is increasing energy prices far beyond any expectations, which will really lead to the detriment of people's livelihoods.

So therefore, what I would like to talk about today is how we can bring these together. How we can bring trans-boundary cooperation together with sustainability? Because the sustainable development goals as created by the United Nations and all the countries united are to develop goals and principles to find solutions in poverty, hunger, well-being, education, energy, and all of these topics facing humanity.

Secondly, I would like to mention how China can play a role in this. I have been privileged to study in China and work in China for a few years. Chinese technology, investment, and general know-how through its citizens, through its experts, can be exported and shared with the world for positive benefit. That is what I think Europe should be talking about far more than it currently is.

Using good practice from around the world, utilizing the know-how from experts who face these challenges far more regularly than we do is needed: especially when we talk about sustainable energy and the cost-of-living crisis that is going to hit this winter.

I think we need to be talking to international partners around the world and China is one of those vital partners. I'm really looking forward to this discussion. Thank you very much for joining us.
